Malaysia Fashion Week to debut in Paris at World Fashion Event - Datuk prof. (Dr) Jimmy Choo to be honoured

The inaugural Malaysia Fashion Week (MFW), a collaborative effort between national trade promotion agency MATRADE (Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation) and the country’s leading fashion event organiser STYLO International, will debut Malaysia in Paris, France at the World Fashion Week as the world’s “Next Fashion Destination” on 30 September 2014.

The world trade fashion event will also see other fashion destinations picked from amongst the 100 or so participating countries including Australia, the Philippines and the continent of Africa. Aside from celebrating Paris as a fashion capital, World Fashion Week (WFW) is a new global fashion platform that offers the opportunity to general consumers, press, media professionals and international buyers to connect with talents and create new bridges of commerce and understanding among the diverse multicultural global fashion world.

 

International advocates of fashion whose work have impacted the industry on a global scale are to be honoured at WFW. However, the biggest honour of all will be bestowed upon Malaysia’s biggest fashion export, Datuk Professor (Dr) Jimmy Choo. Datuk Choo will be honoured with the World Fashion Organisation’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifetime contribution to the growth of fashion on a global level.

It is at WFW in Paris that the Malaysian contingent will launch the upcoming inaugural Malaysia Fashion Week (MFW).  Introducing: Malaysia Fashion Week

Marking its debut as a national and international event, the Malaysia Fashion Week (MFW) 2014 will bring together Malaysian and international fashion distributors to Kuala Lumpur from 17-22 October 2014 with a trade exhibition called FACIT. It will be further supported by a series of fashion shows and gala events.

FACIT is the lifestyle component of MATRADE’s trade initiative INTRADE (International Trade Malaysia), a very successful national and international trade fair that has been running for the past 7 years. In its 8th edition this year, MATRADE is taking a quantum leap in faith for lifestyle and creativity as key growth areas for Malaysia with special emphasis on Fashion, Art, Cosmetics, Interiors and Textile (abbreviated to FACIT). With support from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), MFW will mark the first dedicated trade fashion event organised by a Government Agency (MATRADE) in partnership with the private sector and its multinational collaborators at an international level. The partnership with Stylo International also sees the injection of the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week (MBSAFW) into further boosting MFW. The MBSAFW is a joint collaborative effort of Stylo International and luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz. MBSAFW will see designers from 15 Asian countries showcase their work using the MFW as its Asian platform and INTRADE as its trade collaborator. MATRADE’s partnership with Stylo International also brings to the table the collaboration with the World Fashion Organisation (owner of the World Fashion Week) as Stylo International sits on the organisation’s international Board of Governors and serves as Malaysia’s Fashion Country Representative. World Fashion Week designers from 100 countries will showcase part of their work at the inaugural MFW via the partnership. The 2014 INTRADE is expecting over 450 exhibitors from over 30 countries and 300 trade buyers from 17-22 October 2014 and will be hosted at Menara MATRADE, KL. The event will open to the public from 2:00pm to 10:00 pm on the final day (22 Oct 2014).  MFW Pillars MFW is led by MATRADE’s CEO Datuk Dr Wong Lai Sum as Chairman and STYLO International’s President & CEO Datuk Nancy Yeoh as Co-Chairman. Secretary-General of MITI, Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria acts as Advisor of MFW and Datuk Prof. (Dr) Jimmy Choo is on board as Honorary Advisor. The main pillars of the inaugural MFW will include: Malaysia Fashion Showcase (MFS) Highlighting the very top tier of leading and emerging Malaysian designers and their collections such as Joe Chia, Bon Zainal, Melinda Looi, and many more; as well as creative talents from accessories, hair and make-up industries. Mercedes-Benz STYLO Asia Fashion Week (MBSAFW) This “Asia for Asia” fashion week will feature up to 15 international designers from the ASEAN and Asian region. FACIT (abbreviation for Fashion, Art, Cosmetics, Interior and Textiles) A lifestyle trade fair installation within INTRADE as an initiative to support and showcase fashion and related industries. The installation will include local and international designers, manufacturers and artists covering the following categories: Fashion Apparel & Textiles Fashion Accessories, Footwear & Jewellery Cosmetics, Toiletries, Health & Wellness Gifts, Souvenirs & Stationery Home Products & Services Interiors, Furnishings & Fittings and an added bonus,  World Fashion Week collaboration during Paris Fashion Week season This collaboration will bring about the much-coveted opportunity for Malaysian designers to showcase their work during the most important trade fashion event season in the world ie Paris Fashion Week. The Malaysia Fashion Week will preview annually to world fashion media in Paris at the World Fashion Week as a major fashion destination ahead of its Malaysian showcase. Global arena for the Malaysian fashion industry placed in an international B2B arena, MFW will be used as a platform to further the Malaysian retail sector and boost the country’s standing as a top global fashion and shopping destination.  “In order to elevate fashion to the top of the retail chain, institutional trade on a global level needs to exist for our Malaysian brands. Part of MATRADE’s plan is to bring Malaysian fashion to all the key fashion markets of the world and these key markets to Malaysia”, said Datuk Dr Wong Lai Sum, CEO of MATRADE and Chairman of MFW. Wong elaborated that MATRADE’s joint effort with STYLO will bring the plans closer to realisation as it will utilise MATRADE’s international trade influence and STYLO’s extensive fashion network with the support of its title partner Mercedes-Benz. “In the Government’s continuing effort to put Malaysia in the global fashion map, it is important that the country has a defined fashion agenda.
